Wohnungsgenossenschaft MERKUR eG, based in Berlin, Germany, has a rich history dating back to its founding on March 22, 1957. Initially, it was an Arbeiterwohnungsgenossenschaft (AWG) formed by DDR foreign trade employees. The organization began constructing its first residential buildings in the Lincolnstraße area shortly after its establishment. By 1966, numerous homes had been built across various Berlin districts.
In the early 1990s, MERKUR eG transitioned into its current form, necessitating major adjustments to operate within the new market economy. Despite financial challenges, including significant debts, the organization refused to privatize any of its properties and instead focused on securing its financial stability through increased member contributions.
Today, MERKUR eG manages over 1,600 apartments across 16 residential areas in Berlin's Lichtenberg, Pankow, and Treptow-Köpenick districts. The organization has undertaken extensive modernization projects, including the retrofitting of balconies and the implementation of modern heating systems. Recent developments include a new residential building in the Weitlingkiez area and a 2024 project at Bornitzstraße. MERKUR eG also hosts cultural events and educational activities at its community center, fostering a sense of community among its members.
