wohntURBAN eG is a young housing cooperative based in Munich that aims to create enduring, safe, and socially and ecologically responsible housing in the city. Founded with the intent to challenge conventional urban living, the organisation developed from a growing need for sustainable and inclusive residential solutions for a diverse urban population. One of its driving principles is that residents actively shape both the housing projects and the communal living experience from the outset, focusing on democratic decision-making and self-management.
Since its establishment, wohntURBAN eG has concentrated efforts on integrating new, unconventional forms of cohabitation, emphasising generational, social, and cultural diversity. The organisation prioritises ecological construction methods and accessibility, ensuring that all buildings are resource-efficient and barrier-free, to serve members into old age. Its scope extends beyond providing affordable housing; it aims to foster strong neighbourhood integration and to promote the “city of short distances”—easy access to workplaces, essential services, and education via sustainable mobility.
Currently, its flagship project “Ponyhof” is being developed in Munich's Kreativquartier. This project includes two buildings designed for approximately 38 households, along with extensive communal spaces intended to enhance both resident interaction and broader neighbourhood life. Membership is open to anyone identifying with the cooperative’s values and willing to engage with Munich’s unique housing challenges. WohntURBAN eG continues to seek collaborators and new members to realise further projects shaped by collective action and innovative urban concepts.
