Wohnbaugenossenschaft “Heimstätte Christlicher Arbeiter” is a not-for-profit housing cooperative headquartered in Vienna and founded in 1921. Its origin lies in the effort to provide affordable, secure housing primarily for Christian workers—a mission reflected in both its name and early statutes.
According to the organisation’s own historical account, Heimstätte Christlicher Arbeiter was among the early housing cooperatives that acted independently of political movements but was shaped by Christian social principles. Early on, it focused on the construction of cooperative housing estates that promote community and stability for workers’ families. Building activity began in the 1920s, a period of acute housing shortages in Vienna, and the association participated in the broader expansion of Vienna’s social and cooperative housing sector during the interwar years.
Today, Heimstätte Christlicher Arbeiter manages more than 1,800 apartments, primarily in and around Vienna as well as in Lower Austria. Its portfolio covers apartment buildings from the early- and mid-20th century as well as recent construction. Recent projects include modernisation works and new-build housing in several districts, including Vienna’s 23rd district, where additional residences were completed in 2023. The organisation is also engaged in regular renovation and energy-efficiency upgrades of its existing stock.
Membership of the cooperative remains a prerequisite for tenancy. The cooperative is overseen by a board and relies on member participation in key decisions at annual general meetings. The cooperative’s capital base is strengthened by members’ contributions, following a long-standing mutual aid principle.
