Stephan Maria Lang Architect is an architectural office based in Munich, Germany, founded by Stephan Maria Lang in 1995 after his studies at the Technical University of Munich and ETH Zurich, and experience at international firms such as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and A + P Smithson. The practice operates from Winterstraße 4 in Munich and is led by Lang with his partner Alexander Hann and a small team of architects and specialists.
Lang’s firm is known for residential architecture but has also designed hotels, restaurants, retail, kindergartens, and landscape projects. The office is deeply influenced by Californian modernism and places emphasis on integrating buildings seamlessly with their settings—striving for a Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art, where architectural design, landscape, interior, and light are interwoven.
Notable recent projects include House LW27, which utilizes a rooftop garden to compensate for limited green space; House GR31, a sculptural villa maximizing landscape views; and House Elvesgarden, a contemplative residential retreat that received the Silver A' Design Award in 2021. Another standout, Shingle Residence L011, was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2022 for its sensitive interplay of light, material, and natural surroundings.
The studio has received several honors, such as “Gärten des Jahres” in 2016 and 2018, A' Design Awards, and the BIG SEE Architecture Award in 2025. Lang’s practice retains a hands-on, detail-oriented approach, collaborating closely with clients and craftsmen, and often draws inspiration from Japanese aesthetics and a respect for material aging.
