Stavropoulou Architects is an architectural firm established in 2014 by Elena Stavropoulou, based in Athens, Greece. Elena Stavropoulou has been active as a freelance architect since 2000, gradually building a reputation in sustainable and bioclimatic architectural design before founding the studio. She holds a postgraduate degree in Environment and Energy Studies from the Architectural Association in London, an architecture degree, and earlier pursued studies in law and economics at Aristotle University in Greece.
The studio focuses on a diverse range of projects, including private residences, hotels, wineries, office spaces, small industrial buildings, and cultural commissions. Its approach is characterized by a consistent application of bioclimatic principles: each design carefully considers environmental performance, using natural and locally sourced materials, optimizing building orientation, and integrating passive strategies for ventilation, solar gain, and thermal comfort. Physical models and mock-ups are often used in the design process to refine details and concepts.
Notable examples include the Hotel Capital Suites in Nafplio, a boutique property with eight suites; a bioclimatic winery on the island of Tinos shaped around the winemaking process; and an office for a major Greek technology company in Athens, later acquired by Microsoft. The firm has also worked on set design for the Greek National Opera during the 2021 lockdown and participated in large-scale collaborations, such as the ConfEx Park in Thessaloniki. Stavropoulou Architects has completed projects across Greece, as well as abroad, and its work has been published and exhibited nationally and internationally.
