Stadgenoot is a major housing association based in Amsterdam, created in 2008 by the merger of two historic housing associations—Algemene Woningbouw Vereniging (founded 1910) and Het Oosten (founded 1911). This merger was part of a broader trend to consolidate resources and meet the growing challenges of providing housing in Amsterdam. Stadgenoot operates as a nonprofit and, as of recent public figures, manages approximately 30,000 homes, business premises, and parking spaces throughout Amsterdam, making it one of the city’s largest landlords.
Stadgenoot’s portfolio is diverse, including a significant proportion of social rental homes, which in 2017 totaled nearly 25,000 units, as well as specialized accommodation for groups such as young people, the elderly, and others in need of support. Its activities are not limited to maintaining existing housing: the organization also builds new homes each year and is involved in major urban renewal and development projects. For example, under Stadgenoot’s leadership, the Oostenburg neighborhood is being redeveloped into an accessible area combining social, mid-rent, and owner-occupied housing alongside commercial and creative spaces. This project aims to deliver around 1,800 homes by 2026, with a focus on inclusivity and the preservation of historic industrial heritage.
Stadgenoot also collaborates on initiatives to sustain Amsterdam’s creative sectors by providing affordable spaces for artists and entrepreneurs. Headquartered in two listed historic buildings on Sarphatistraat, Stadgenoot is recognized for balancing social objectives with a pragmatic approach to property management in Amsterdam’s increasingly challenging housing market.
