Neustark AG is a Swiss climate technology company founded in 2019 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich by Johannes Tiefenthaler and Valentin Gutknecht. The company specializes in permanent carbon dioxide (CO2) removal and storage, particularly using recycled mineral waste such as demolition concrete. Neustark’s technology captures biogenic CO2 at sources like biogas plants and injects it into concrete debris during recycling, triggering mineralization that converts the CO2 into limestone. This approach permanently locks carbon into construction material, enabling it to be reused in new infrastructure.
By 2024, Neustark had deployed capture and storage solutions at 33 sites across Switzerland, Germany, and beyond, cumulatively removing over 4,000 tonnes of CO2. Current projects include the first commercial CO2 storage site in Berlin, in partnership with Heim, storing more than 1,000 tonnes annually. Neustark’s solutions are now in use at public and private construction projects and offer climate certificates to organizations seeking to offset hard-to-reduce emissions; notable clients include Microsoft and UBS.
The company’s near-term goals involve scaling operations to achieve annual removal of one million tonnes of CO2 by 2030. Its activities are verified by Gold Standard certification and Neustark is rapidly expanding with new sites and partnerships throughout Europe.
