The Association of Hungarian Architects (Magyar Építőművészek Szövetsége, MÉSZ) is a professional association representing architects in Hungary. Its work centres on architectural quality and on making significant Hungarian architectural projects, plans and professional perspectives visible to the public. It also contributes to professional and public discussion through events and programmes, including talks and exhibitions. 1312
MÉSZ was founded in 1902. Its founding assembly took place in Budapest on 8 June, chaired by Ödön Lechner; Alajos Hauszmann was elected its first leader. Among the organisation’s early priorities was establishing compulsory architectural competitions, and it began publishing a professional journal in 1903. 6
The association is based at the House of Architects, 1088 Budapest, Ötpacsirta utca 2. 54 Its activities are principally national, while it also has an international professional connection: MÉSZ is described as a founding member of the International Union of Architects (UIA) and Hungary’s representative in that organisation. 13 As of 2024, its president is architect Csaba Nagy. 211
