Lefier is a Dutch housing association formed on 1 January 2009 through the merger of three organisations: In, based in Groningen; Volksbelang, from Hoogezand-Sappemeer; and Wooncom, which operated in Emmen, Borger-Odoorn and Stadskanaal.4 Its legal name is Stichting Lefier, and its statutory seat is in the municipality of Midden-Groningen.3
The association operates in five municipalities: Groningen, Midden-Groningen, Stadskanaal, Borger-Odoorn and Emmen, across the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe in the northern Netherlands.11 In its 2024 reporting, Lefier counted 33,319 rental units, including 28,313 homes; its portfolio also includes student rooms, commercial property, storage units and parking spaces.12
Lefier’s work includes renting homes, building new housing, maintaining and improving its existing stock, and investing in energy-efficiency upgrades.12 Its 2024 report records the completion of 174 new homes and energy-efficiency improvements to 1,223 homes that year.12 The organisation also works with tenants and local partners, including municipalities, on affordable housing and neighbourhoods.412
Elles Dost has served as Lefier’s chief executive (bestuurder) since 1 January 2020. Lefier has several local offices; LinkedIn identifies its Groningen address as its headquarters, while the organisation’s statutory seat is in Midden-Groningen.2
