JJW Arkitekter, based in Copenhagen, Denmark, is one of the country’s larger architectural studios. The firm traces its roots to 1986, when Anders Holst Jensen, Peter Henning Jørgensen, and Kaj Frederik Wohlfeldt founded the practice, originally under the name Jensen + Jørgensen + Wohlfeldt, before adopting the current name in 2004. Over more than three decades, JJW Arkitekter has grown in size and reputation, navigating Denmark’s rapidly evolving architectural landscape.
The studio’s portfolio is notable for its breadth across public buildings and residential projects, especially in the greater Copenhagen area. JJW Arkitekter designed the transformation of Grøndalsvængets School, a nearly century-old institution in Copenhagen, extending and refurbishing it to support contemporary learning environments. This project involved a significant renovation of the original 1929 building, the addition of two new wings totaling 5,150 square meters, and a focus on sustainability through the use of recycled bricks and circular building concepts.
Another characteristic example is the South Harbour School, a large public school in Copenhagen designed to merge aquatic education with broad civic use. The school, which accommodates around 650 students, incorporates water-based activities directly into its daily curriculum, using its location on the harbour as a defining pedagogical feature.
