Founded in 1980 by Karl-Heinz Maerzke and Brigitte Hellwich, the company initially focused on individually planned detached houses, leveraging a brick-on-brick approach. As of the early 2020s, HELMA was delivering builds for more than 1,000 customers per year and employing several hundred people. In Hamburg and surrounding regions, the HELMA Group’s subsidiary HELMA Wohnungsbau GmbH develops and sells housing from single-family homes to multi-unit properties, often as full turnkey packages. Their portfolio also extends to Berlin, Hanover, Leipzig, and Potsdam. Individual projects can range from single homes to larger developments with up to 250 plots.
HELMA’s financial performance in recent years saw annual sales exceeding 300 million euros in Germany, though the group has faced restructuring and insolvency proceedings since 2023. Despite challenges, its legacy is defined by decades of completed projects and expertise in solid, customizable homes.
