Hamburger Wohnbaugenossenschaften e.V. is an association established in 1976 that represents 30 housing cooperatives in Hamburg. Collectively, its members provide around 135,000 apartments, housing over 230,000 residents in the Hamburg region. The organisation’s history is rooted in the late 19th century, when industrialisation and overcrowding drove citizens and professional groups in Hamburg to form housing cooperatives. The earliest among these is the Allgemeine Deutsche Schiffzimmerer-Genossenschaft, established in 1875.
The association’s main activities focus on advocacy, public information about cooperative living, and representing member interests in discussions with politics, business, and media. Its operations extend beyond advocacy: together, the member cooperatives form a significant economic force in the city, employing about 1,550 staff and offering approximately 150 apprenticeships.
Hamburger Wohnbaugenossenschaften e.V. members have been pivotal in shaping modern urban quarters, such as the Neue Mitte Altona and parts of HafenCity. Their ongoing projects emphasize energy-efficient construction, sustainable renovation, and moderate rental pricing. From 2012 to 2019, the cooperatives invested more than 2 billion euros in energy-related modernization and over 2.1 billion euros in new housing, keeping their average rents below Hamburg’s market average. In 2021, 1,025 new apartments were completed, with 880 more planned for 2022. The organisation’s activities typically ensure that one in five rental units in Hamburg remains accessible at affordable rates, directly impacting long-term housing stability for the city’s population.
