GREENPASS GmbH is a Vienna-based company founded in 2018 that develops digital solutions to help cities and real estate projects adapt to climate change. The company originated as a spin-off from years of research at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) and its parent company Green4Cities. The founders include Florian Kraus, Bernhard Scharf, Doris Schnepf, and Peter Küsters.
With a team of roughly 11 employees, GREENPASS GmbH has introduced one of the first software platforms for standardized assessment, optimization, and certification of urban development projects for climate resilience. Their approach quantifies the effects of buildings, materials, and vegetation across six urban challenges: climate, water, air, biodiversity, energy, and cost.
Since its inception, GREENPASS technology has been applied in more than 60 projects across nine European countries. More than 220 organizations, mainly from real estate and related sectors, use the platform to manage the physical climate risks of their portfolios, in line with European ESG and taxonomy regulations.
Noteworthy projects include the Biotope City in Vienna, the urban IKEA furniture store near Westbahnhof, and residential districts such as FLAIR in the City and the LeopoldQuartier. Each project provided measurable impact, such as lowering urban heat or optimizing neighborhood green space.
GREENPASS GmbH is supported by sector-focused investors like aws Gründerfonds and Peak Pride. Its work is recognized as contributing to climate adaptation in urban planning without resorting to generalized sustainability claims.
