Fundação Cuidar o Futuro is a Portuguese private foundation established on July 13, 2001, by the Graal association at the initiative of Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo, Portugal's first and only female Prime Minister. The foundation draws its name from "Caring for the Future," a 1998 report produced by the Independent Commission on Population and Quality of Life, which Pintasilgo chaired under UN auspices between 1992 and 1997.
The organization positions itself as an agent of social change, working to shift paradigms in public policy and collective consciousness regarding gender equality and ethical responsibility. Its philosophical foundation rests on the Culture and Ethics of Care, reflecting Pintasilgo's belief in what she called "philanthropy of ideas" rather than financial philanthropy. The foundation's primary asset remains Pintasilgo's intellectual legacy, with a significant portion of her private archive donated to the University of Coimbra in December 2014.
Recognized as a Public Utility Entity in January 2008, the foundation operates independently of religious denominations or political parties. Following revisions to its statutes in 2015 under Portugal's Foundation Framework Law, it refocused its mission to intensify dissemination of Pintasilgo's thought, support aligned initiatives, and launch intervention projects addressing contemporary population issues. The foundation also manages the Alto da Praia heritage site and promotes dialogue that values pluralism and ethical responsibility, emphasizing women's contributions to institutional complexity.
