FrauenWohnen eG is a self-administered and self-managed housing cooperative for women, based in Munich, Germany.310 It was established on 1 March 1998 by 48 women after preparatory work by the FrauenWohnen e.V. association, which had been founded in 1995 by eight Munich women.23 The cooperative is registered in the Munich cooperative register under number 2510.7
Its purpose is to create and preserve affordable, long-term housing for women, including housing protected from speculative development and secure against ordinary termination.38 The cooperative operates as a rental cooperative rather than an organisation based on individual ownership; members who move into its housing receive a lifelong right of residence.3 Cooperative members are co-owners of the properties collectively, while the buildings remain the property of FrauenWohnen eG.11
The organisation has three housing complexes in Munich: 49 apartments in Messestadt Riem, 25 in the Westend district and 43 in northern Schwabing’s Domagkpark.8 Its projects include both privately financed and publicly subsidised apartments, with planning intended to reflect women-specific housing needs.3 In new projects, prospective residents can participate in planning and contribute their preferences and requirements.11
FrauenWohnen eG’s activities are geographically local and focused on Munich. Its website currently reports a vacant, publicly subsidised two-room apartment in Riem and states that it is not accepting new members for the time being, although women holding an EOF registration certificate with at least 50 points may register their interest.1 The organisation’s listed headquarters are at Ingeborg-Bachmann-Straße 26 in Munich.7 Publicly available material identifies Sabina Prommersberger as a board member and architect; the organisation’s current website does not list a complete current board.612
