The Düsseldorfer Wohnungsgenossenschaft eG is a housing cooperative based in Düsseldorf, Germany, and describes itself as the city’s largest and oldest housing cooperative. It was founded on 6 May 1898 in response to a severe shortage of housing, with the aim of pooling members’ resources to create affordable homes. 8911
DWG’s core activity is managing residential properties. Its housing stock is around 8,000 homes, spread across nearly all districts of Düsseldorf and the surrounding area; the cooperative reports 11,175 members. 891 The organisation’s activities are primarily local and regional, rather than national: its published housing stock and stated area of operation are concentrated in Düsseldorf and its surroundings. 91
Membership is connected to occupying a DWG home: the cooperative says that people who move into one of its homes become members, rather than simply tenants. 1213 Because available homes are limited, DWG currently admits new members only when a property is re-let. 1 Its registered office is at Wagnerstraße 29, 40212 Düsseldorf. 23 The current listed executive board comprises Heiko Leonhard, speaker of the board, and Thorsten Karrenberg. 2
