Cooperativa Edilizia Nazario Sauro is a long-established, non-profit housing cooperative based in Rome, founded on December 6, 1919. It was originally established by members of the Italian Navy and other state armed forces, under the patronage and oversight of the Chief of Staff of the Navy, who still appoints its key leadership positions. The cooperative’s mission from inception has been to provide affordable housing, primarily to military personnel and their families.
Throughout its history, Cooperativa Edilizia Nazario Sauro has built and assigned over 500 dwellings to its members. These properties are located primarily in Rome but also in other cities with a significant naval or military presence such as La Spezia, Livorno, and Taranto. Significant recent projects in Rome include buildings completed in 2005 (10 apartments), 2011 (14 apartments), and 2017 (18 apartments).
The cooperative currently has about 400 members and continues to expand its activities. It is involved in the construction of 16 new subsidized housing units in the Cecchignola Nord Bis area in Rome. There are also ongoing negotiations for the allocation of new housing through partnerships with private owners, building firms, and public authorities, as well as initiatives in the Vallerano area. Membership eligibility has gradually expanded to include personnel from all branches of the Italian Armed Forces and law enforcement.
