Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe is a Brussels-based coalition of environmental and development organisations that works to influence climate policy across Europe. Its stated purpose is to help civil society organisations shape effective climate policy in the European Union, its member states and other European countries. The organisation’s headquarters are at Mundo Matongé, Rue d’Edimbourg 26, Brussels, Belgium. 17
CAN Europe says it has more than 200 member organisations active in 40 European countries, together representing over 1,700 NGOs and more than 40 million citizens. Members coordinate advocacy, exchange information and develop joint positions on climate issues. 714 Its work covers climate, energy and development policy, and includes campaigns, policy positions and collaboration with civil society partners. The network also seeks to amplify the voices of communities most affected by the climate crisis, including young people and frontline communities. 7
The organisation’s geographic focus is Europe, including both EU and non-EU countries. It also engages with international climate policy, including through coordinated NGO strategies on international climate issues. 1114 The organisation’s current director is Chiara Martinelli, according to its staff page. 12
CAN Europe is a legally registered Belgian association established on 9 November 1999, according to a Belgian company-information listing. 2 This refers to the European organisation; the wider Climate Action Network traces its origins to 1989, when organisations established a network to coordinate climate activities. 13
