BUWOG Bauträger GmbH, headquartered in Berlin, is a major German residential project developer with a history tracing back to 1951, when its parent company was founded in Austria to provide affordable housing for federal employees. The company transitioned from a state-owned enterprise to a private developer, expanding into Germany in 2010. Since 2018, BUWOG Bauträger GmbH has operated as part of Vonovia SE, Europe’s largest residential real estate group.
With approximately 300 employees across eight locations nationwide, the company’s scope is broad, focusing exclusively on developing new residential properties across Germany, from land acquisition to the marketing and handover of finished units. BUWOG Bauträger’s development pipeline currently includes around 55,000 residential units either under construction or in planning, making it the largest private residential project developer in Berlin according to independent studies.
Recent and current projects illustrate BUWOG’s urban development approach. In Berlin-Grünau, it created “Quartier 52° Nord,” using the sponge city principle to manage rainwater on-site, incorporating features such as green roofs and a central 6,000-square-metre water basin. The project has received national awards for its architectural and environmental innovation. Another flagship development is the Martinshöfe project in Weingarten, aiming to deliver 500 new homes alongside commercial and green spaces, although construction has been delayed by rising costs in the sector.
