BürgerStiftung München is a community foundation established in 2000 by residents of Munich to promote sustainable development in the city. Initially named Bürgerstiftung Zukunftsfähiges München, it emerged from local civic engagement, focusing on social justice, ecological responsibility, and economic sustainability. As of 2024, the foundation manages assets exceeding 2.5 million euros and has invested over 3 million euros in diverse projects throughout the city, reaching more than 70,000 individuals.
The foundation operates locally and independently, with most of its work carried out by a small part-time staff and a larger group of volunteers. In 2023, it allocated over 700,000 euros, with 85 percent directed toward project funding. Its activities include both initiating its own projects and supporting external initiatives. The foundation acts as a platform for civic involvement and administers additional smaller foundations and funds.
Recent project examples include mentoring programs that support secondary school students in finding apprenticeships, art-based projects in schools, and urban initiatives for biodiversity. It runs a "Chancenpatenschaften" program to foster social participation for disadvantaged groups and supports community gardening. Following the Agenda 2030, BürgerStiftung München engages in partnerships to increase sustainability, encourage local action, and promote equal opportunities.
Participation in the foundation is open to all Munich residents, who can contribute time, ideas, or financial resources. The foundation maintains transparency in its operations and reporting, continuously seeking solutions for a fair and sustainable urban society.
