Boligforeningen AAB, founded in 1912 as Arbejdernes Andels-Boligforening, is a social housing organization with roots in the Danish labor movement. Established during a period of housing shortage and high unemployment among construction workers, it aimed to provide affordable and healthy homes for workers in Copenhagen. The association quickly commissioned and managed new residential buildings, with its first construction completed in 1913 on Frederiksberg. Today, AAB administrates approximately 18,000 to 20,000 homes across more than 100 departments in the Greater Copenhagen area.
AAB operates on a non-profit basis, focusing on the principles of residents’ democracy. Each housing estate within the organization has an elected committee, enabling local decision-making and significant resident influence over living conditions. The central authority rests with the members, who assemble through a committee of representatives biannually to set policy and direction. The executive board, led by Peter Basland, manages daily operations with a staff of about 120, and the main office is located in central Copenhagen, with additional offices in Ballerup and Ishøj.
AAB continues to modernize its housing stock and participates in urban renewal projects. The association is recognized for its early and ongoing commitment to architectural quality, with notable architects designing several estates. Recent activities center on renovating existing properties and maintaining a broad, affordable housing supply. While its legacy is interwoven with Copenhagen’s urban development, AAB remains a key actor in Denmark's social housing sector.
