The Beamten-Wohnungs-Baugenossenschaft Düsseldorf eG (BWB) is a housing cooperative based in Düsseldorf, Germany. It was founded in 1898 in response to rapid urban growth and a shortage of affordable housing; the original members were civil servants who did not receive employer-provided housing. Its founding purpose was to provide members with good, secure and socially responsible housing.18
Initially, membership was restricted to civil servants. The cooperative later opened membership to people in other professions, in part to qualify for public financing. In 1913, the Beamten-Wohnungsverein merged with the Düsseldorfer Baugenossenschaft, founded in 1912, to form the BWB; the new statutes also established its non-profit status.1
Today, the cooperative’s activities centre on providing and managing housing for its members. Its stock comprises more than 3,100 homes, located across Düsseldorf’s city districts and in nearby Langenfeld. The BWB reports having more than 7,700 members.35 Its geographic activity is therefore local and regional, centred on Düsseldorf and the surrounding area.3
The cooperative’s registered seat and headquarters are in Düsseldorf, at Kaiserstraße 46.2 Its current board members are Jürgen Raczek and Guido Sinn, and Dr. Marc Jülicher chairs the supervisory board.2 The BWB’s LinkedIn page lists it as based in Düsseldorf; no BWB Instagram profile was identified in the search results.4
