Asuntosäätiö is a Finnish non-profit housing organisation founded in 1951 to address housing shortages and develop housing in Finland. It is based in Espoo and describes itself as one of the country’s largest residential property owners. 37
The organisation offers around 18,000 homes in more than 30 Finnish municipalities, serving nearly 32,000 residents. Most of its homes are right-of-occupancy apartments; it also provides rental and owner-occupied housing. 7 Its work includes developing housing and residential environments with residents, municipalities and other partners. The foundation says it aims to support safe, sustainable and affordable living environments. 7
Right-of-occupancy housing is a central part of its offering. Asuntosäätiö lists these homes in more than 30 locations, including apartment buildings, semi-detached houses and terraced houses. 1 Residents pay a right-of-occupancy fee of 15% and a monthly residential charge; the fee is returned when they give up the home. The arrangement is presented as combining the flexibility of renting with the stability of owner-occupation, without requiring a large mortgage. 1
Residents may stay for as long as they wish and give up their home on three months’ notice. Under specified conditions, they may temporarily rent it out for up to two years, assign it to a family member or leave it as an inheritance. Asuntosäätiö also says it manages maintenance and offers residents additional services and benefits. 1
The foundation’s chief executive is identified on its contact page as Jukka Helminen. 6
