Arkitema Architects, based in Copenhagen and Aarhus, is one of Scandinavia’s largest architecture firms, with approximately 500–550 employees working from offices in five Nordic cities: Copenhagen, Aarhus, Oslo, Stockholm, and Malmö. Established in 1969 by five architecture students from Aarhus, the firm originally operated as Arkitektgruppen Aarhus and was rebranded as Arkitema Architects in 2003. In pursuit of a broader Nordic presence, the organisation merged with Swedish and Norwegian firms in 2011 and 2015, respectively, and joined the engineering group COWI Holding A/S in 2019.
Arkitema’s work spans all architectural scales and segments. The firm is involved in complex urban developments, residential districts, educational institutions, health, workspaces, and cultural buildings. Notably, Arkitema has contributed to the transformation of Copenhagen’s Sluseholmen and has masterplanned districts such as urban quarters in Copenhagen and Stockholm. Other projects include the Swim Stadium Bellahøj in Copenhagen, Vibeeng School in Haslev, and Samsø Energy Academy.
Their practice integrates architecture and consulting; Arkitema Consulting offers expertise in construction management, sustainability, user participation, BIM, and client advice. Each project is grounded in deep analysis of context and user needs, aiming to balance functional, aesthetic, and economic criteria. Sustainability and social frameworks have been central to the firm’s philosophy since its inception. Today, Arkitema is managed by a group of partners and continues to deliver local and international projects with Scandinavian architectural principles.
