Gemeinschaft B.R.O.T. Kalksburg is a Vienna-based non-profit housing community that operates a residential complex dedicated to communal, integrative living and the promotion of collaborative housing projects. The initiative is organised as the association “Gemeinschaft B.R.O.T. – Kalksburg, Verein für gemeinschaftliches Wohnen”, located at Promenadeweg 5, 1230 Vienna, Austria13. The project forms part of the broader “Gemeinschaft B.R.O.T.” network, which originated in Hernals in 1987; the Kalksburg community was initiated around 2006 and constituted as an independent association in 200767.
On the site next to Kollegium Kalksburg, the association developed a residential home with 57 housing units and several shared spaces, including common rooms and outdoor areas3. The housing project is implemented as a charitable association, in cooperation with Caritas and with support from the City of Vienna3. The grounds include around ten hectares of forest and meadow, gardens for fruit and vegetables, and a playground, providing substantial communal outdoor space3.
Beyond managing the housing complex, Gemeinschaft B.R.O.T. Kalksburg actively supports other housing projects. It offers information and knowledge transfer on communal living, access to its shared spaces upon request, lectures on the origins and everyday life of the project, and a download platform with statutes, concepts and document templates2. Regular open assemblies, action days on the property, cultural events and courses (such as yoga, music, and movement classes) reflect its focus on participatory community life. The association is publicly represented by spokespersons Christian Baumgartner and Martina Gubo5.
