Domagkpark is a residential quarter in Munich, Germany, developed on the site of the former Funkkaserne, a military area that was gradually converted for civilian use after 1993. The new neighbourhood was built in phases between 2015 and 2019 and now comprises around 1,800 apartments with roughly 4,000 residents. The project was planned as a mixed-use district, combining housing with retail, services, workspaces and community facilities.
A defining feature of Domagkpark is its emphasis on neighbourhood organisation and resident participation. The development is associated with a consortium of housing actors, including cooperatives, building groups, municipal housing companies and private developers. The project is also linked to WOGENO München eG, which operates some of the neighbourhood’s shared facilities and community-oriented spaces. According to project information, this approach was meant from the outset to create a living environment in which future residents could help shape the district.
Community life is supported by several local institutions. The Domagkpark e.V. association coordinates information and networking for the quarter and runs the neighbourhood website. It also supports cultural and social activities in the district. Among the established facilities are the Nachbarschaftstreff and Wohncafé, operated since spring 2015 under Munich’s concept of neighbourhood-based resident work, and the DomagKasino, which opened on 1 May 2016 as an open meeting place with regular volunteer-run events.
Domagkpark stands on a site with a layered history: from a Nazi-era barracks, to a postwar US and later Bundeswehr facility, to an artists’ colony before redevelopment began. Today it is presented as a mixed, socially connected urban quarter rather than a single housing complex.
