The ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius is a charitable foundation established in Hamburg in 1971 by publisher Gerd Bucerius, with Ebelin Bucerius as co-founder. It was created to support an open and active civil society. 25 The foundation is now styled ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS and is independent of the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT. 7
Its work covers science and research, arts and culture, education, politics and society, and journalism. It funds external projects and develops initiatives of its own, with activity in Hamburg and across Germany, as well as international programmes and partnerships. 51213 Its work includes scholarships and support for researchers, educational and mentoring initiatives, cultural projects, and programmes addressing public debate and independent journalism. 2512
Two major institutions associated with the foundation are Bucerius Law School, founded by the foundation in 2000 as Germany’s first foundation-endowed law school, and Bucerius Kunst Forum, established in 2002 as an international exhibition venue in central Hamburg. 2 Recent projects have also included support for civil society in eastern Germany and a journalism centre in Berlin. 12
