The University of Luxembourg is a public, international research university established by law on 12 August 2003, bringing together four existing education and research institutions. Its creation formed part of Luxembourg’s effort to develop a knowledge-based economy and establish a research-centred, multilingual university. 311
The university’s main site and headquarters are at Maison du Savoir on the Belval Campus, in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg. It also operates campuses in Kirchberg and Limpertsberg in Luxembourg City, giving it a presence in both the south of the country and the capital. 28
The university combines teaching and research, with an interdisciplinary approach and an international outlook. Its work includes fundamental and applied research, degree and doctoral programmes, and engagement with society. The university describes its mission as linking research, education, innovation and societal impact. 111 Its activities are based in Luxembourg, while its international character and partnerships extend its reach beyond the country. 311
Professor Jens Kreisel has served as rector since 1 January 2023. 12 The university’s history records that it grew from four predecessor institutions, and that within five years of its founding it had around 4,000 students, nearly 30 study programmes and about 20 partnerships with foreign universities. 3
