Möckernkiez eG is a cooperative organization based in Berlin, Germany, that has pioneered a unique model of sustainable and social living. Born out of a citizens' initiative, the cooperative aimed to create an intergenerational residential complex that is ecological, sustainable, social, and barrier-free.
Located in the heart of Berlin-Kreuzberg, Möckernkiez is a 3-hectare site that has been transformed into a vibrant neighborhood with 471 residential units, a hotel, youth center, organic market, doctor's office, neighborhood meeting place, and daycare center. The project is designed to be car-free and oriented towards pedestrians and bicycle traffic, with a focus on accessibility and community interaction.
The cooperative's approach is holistic, integrating architecture and open space to create a diverse and mixed neighborhood. Residents are members of the cooperative and are actively involved in the decision-making process. The organization prioritizes social cohesion and a lively neighborhood atmosphere, with a range of communal spaces and activities that foster a sense of community.
