Habitat for Humanity Magyarország is a housing-focused nonprofit organisation operating in Hungary since 1996.212 It consists of two entities: Habitat for Humanity Magyarország Alapítvány and HFH International Hungary Szolgáltató Nonprofit Kft., both established in 1996.23 Its registered headquarters are at 1027 Budapest, Margit körút 26.23
The organisation combines direct assistance to households with policy and research work on housing. Its stated objective is to support people in need while promoting fairer and more inclusive housing policy in Hungary.1113 Its practical activities include home construction and renovation, energy-efficiency improvements, housing support, training and assistance for families experiencing housing difficulties.410 It also works with volunteers, donors and institutional partners, and offers open volunteer days to people living in Hungary.9
The organisation’s programmes have a national reach. In 2023, it reported activities in 29 Hungarian settlements, where it assisted 1,446 people.10 During the same year, it supported smaller housing improvements for 76 families and contributed to 68 house or flat renovations in 27 settlements.10 Its work has also included support for the housing of Ukrainian refugees.10
Alongside its direct programmes, Habitat for Humanity Magyarország conducts advocacy at local, national and European Union levels, making policy proposals concerning housing.10 Its governance includes a three-member board of trustees; the listed trustees are Kuszkó Judit Eszter, who is chair, Koen Basiel Maegherman and Richard Kevin Hathaway.23 Following the resignation of managing director Zsolt Szegfalvi in April 2025, Illyés Tímea was appointed to perform the managing director’s duties during the interim period.14
