GeWoGe 1897 eG, formally the Gemeinnützige Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft von 1897 eG, is a housing cooperative based in Mönchengladbach, Germany. Its roots date to 14 March 1897, when the Spar- und Bauverein e.G.m.b.H. zu Mönchengladbach was founded; the present organisation developed from the merger of three local housing cooperatives in 1942 and adopted its current name in 1964.45
The cooperative provides housing for its members, with a stated purpose of supporting secure and socially responsible housing. Its portfolio includes more than 1,200 homes of different sizes and in different locations, and it also maintains existing properties and builds new housing.1 The organisation says it concentrates its activities within Mönchengladbach, rather than operating across Germany or internationally.5
Its work includes letting homes, offering housing-related services and maintaining its stock. Current development activity includes two apartment buildings on Kärntner Straße in the Windberg district, planned to contain 14 homes, eight garages and six parking spaces.1 The cooperative also identifies affordable housing and the upkeep of older buildings as priorities.1
The registered address is Am Steinberg 37, 41061 Mönchengladbach.2 The company’s website names Thomas Schröder as part of the executive leadership; its legal notice lists him, Thomas Körfges and Reinhard Schrutek as authorised members of the management board, and Hanne-Kathrin Bertrams as chair of the supervisory board.21
