Bristol Community Land Trust (BCLT) is a not-for-profit organisation based in Bristol, United Kingdom, focused on community-led housing and the long-term stewardship of affordable homes.12 It was founded in 2011 as a community benefit society to identify and redevelop land for community benefit and affordable housing for Bristol residents.1115
BCLT acquires land, develops housing and works with partner organisations to bring land into community ownership.6 Its activities include supporting residents to participate in the design and delivery of housing, promoting self-organised housing, and helping locally focused community land trusts to develop.1 The organisation also aims to deliver environmentally sustainable housing and community facilities.1
Its first development, at 325 Fishponds Road, converted a former chapel and school site into 12 homes. Completed in 2016, the scheme includes shared-ownership and affordable-rent homes, and residents are members of the trust.13 BCLT’s Shaldon Road project in Lockleaze is a larger development of 50 affordable homes, delivered with Brighter Places and designed around energy efficiency, mixed tenure and community involvement.1213 The project is being developed on a former allotment site transferred by Bristol City Council.13
BCLT’s primary geographic focus is the Bristol city region.1 Through Community Led Homes West, which it hosts, the organisation also provides support and advice on community-led housing across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset, and North Somerset.2 Its current chair is identified as Patsy Hudson.10 Earlier published board information names architect and community-sector practitioner Keith Cowling as chair, reflecting a previous leadership period.14
