Are We Europe is a non-profit media foundation established in 2016 by four Dutch university students—Marije Martens, Mick ter Reehorst, Ties Gijzel, and Kyrill Hartog—who grew frustrated with how traditional media covered European affairs. Based in Brussels with an additional office in Amsterdam, the organization operates as a registered Dutch foundation working toward a borderless pan-European media space.
The foundation publishes a quarterly print and online magazine exploring European identity and underreported stories across the continent. It collaborates with over 800 storytellers, ranging from emerging journalists to established visual creators, producing long-form features, podcasts, videos, and photo essays. The print magazine launched in 2018 and shifted to a bimonthly schedule by 2022. Content covers themes including climate change, elections, migration, and social issues, examining topics like erosion-threatened Irish coastal towns or Poland's LGBT-free zones through personal narratives and in-depth analysis.
Beyond its magazine, Are We Europe operates several initiatives. The Circle Hubs program creates media knowledge hubs across European cities, while the Untold Stories project amplifies voices from underrepresented nations. ENTR connects content creators producing European-focused social media stories. The organization also maintains KANO, a Brussels-based co-working space for media professionals and creatives.
Funding comes from foundation grants, partnerships, branded content creation for NGOs and think tanks, and magazine sales. The organization targets educated English-speaking Europeans aged 25-35, with readers typically multilingual and often participating in Erasmus exchanges. Its audience skews female at 57 percent. Are We Europe received recognition including third place in the European Charlemagne Youth Prize in 2017 and a 2019 European Press Prize shortlist nomination for "The Drums of Democracy."
