The 11th Forum Architectural Science centers on how existing buildings and urban fabric can be transformed rather than replaced, and on what kinds of common-good priorities should guide that process. Held in Vienna, Austria, the event is aimed at researchers, architects, urban planners, and practitioners engaged in architecture, heritage, and building transformation.
The conference title, “Transformation: reBuilding and reThinking the ‘Built Fabric’ Advocating for New Common Good(s)”, signals its main purpose: to synthesize recent debates on the transformation of the built environment while asking what new forms of advocacy are needed to balance social, ecological, and aesthetic concerns. According to the event description, it is not simply about technical refurbishment, but about redefining the values that shape decisions around reuse, adaptation, and redevelopment.
The programme combines a public discussion and two days of symposium sessions. The opening discussion takes place at the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W), with keynote input from Ana Miljački of MIT, Boston, and contributions from scholars and practitioners including Anamarija Batista, Waltraud P. Indrist, Lorenzo De Chiffre, Thomas Madreiter, Rudolf Scheuvens, and Sigrid Stagl. The following sessions are hosted at TU Wien and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, reflecting the event’s interdisciplinary scope and its connection between academic research, design practice, and urban policy.
The conference is organised by Network Architectural Science e.V. in cooperation with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, TU Wien, and Architekturzentrum Wien – Az W. A peer-reviewed, open-access publication is planned afterwards in the Forum Architectural Science book series, indicating that the event forms part of a broader research platform rather than a one-off meeting.
