The Conference on Affordable Housing – Addressing the European Housing Crisis took place on March 24, 2025, in Brussels at the European Parliament. The event was co-organised by the European Commission and the European Parliament.
The conference was jointly opened by Irene Tinagli, Chair of the European Parliament Special Committee on the Housing Crisis in the European Union, and Dan Jørgensen, Commissioner for Energy and Housing. This high-level opening session was followed by debates with Members of the European Parliament and interactive panel discussions with stakeholders.
The conference marked the beginning of a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to affordable housing policy, ensuring inclusive engagement with all relevant stakeholders and levels of governance. It brought together hundred participants, including representatives from EU institutions, national and local authorities, and stakeholders from the housing sector.
The event formally launched both the Special Committee on the Housing Crisis in the European Union and the European Commission's new Task Force for Housing. Discussions focused on the urgent housing crisis affecting millions of people across the EU, exploring potential EU-level solutions and efforts underway in member states to improve access to affordable housing.
Following this launch event, the European Commission subsequently published a call for evidence in April for the European Affordable Housing Plan, with a public consultation running until October 2025. The collected input was set to help identify policy actions for the EU's first-ever Affordable Housing Plan, scheduled for presentation at the beginning of 2026.
