Asunto Oy Helsingin Sompasaaren Sumppi is a resident-led housing company in Helsinki, Finland, realised through a joint building venture in the Sompasaari district.189 The project is located at Loviseholminpolku 8, 00540 Helsinki, on the eastern edge of Loviseholminpuisto, at the corner of Loviseholminpolku and Kaljaasi Auroran kuja.1 It comprises 39 individually designed apartments, each tailored to its residents, reflecting the project’s emphasis on occupant participation in design and construction.1
The building company was founded and developed by Asunto Oy Helsingin Sompasaaren Sumppi, established by members of Koti Kaupungissa ry, a residents’ association active in community-oriented housing.1 Architectural design was carried out by Cederqvist & Jäntti Arkkitehdit Oy, a Finnish practice noted in professional literature for its work on joint building ventures, including Sompasaaren Sumppi (completed around 2019).189 Construction was executed by Rakennusosakeyhtiö (a construction company named on the project page).1 The land plot is owned by the City of Helsinki, while the shares in the housing company are owned by private individuals; no ordinary apartment sales took place as the dwellings were allocated within the resident group.1
The building is founded on bedrock on the original Sompasaari island and uses mainly precast reinforced concrete elements with in-situ cast intermediate floors.1 It is heated by geothermal energy distributed via underfloor heating, with summer cooling also drawn from the ground.1 Additional energy is captured through wastewater heat recovery and solar panels, and each apartment has its own mechanical ventilation unit with heat recovery.1
