The Unternehmensgruppe Nassauische Heimstätte | Wohnstadt, known as NHW, is a major player in the German housing sector headquartered in Frankfurt am Main and Kassel. Established over 100 years ago, the organisation is state-owned and currently employs around 890 staff. NHW manages approximately 60,000 rental apartments spread across 112 municipalities, making it the largest housing provider in the federal state of Hesse and one of the leading housing companies in Germany.
NHW’s activities encompass not only the construction and management of residential buildings but also broader urban development. The company operates under brands such as ProjektStadt, focused on sustainable urban planning and development. One of their core objectives is to reach climate-neutrality by 2045, a goal reflected in their participation in initiatives like "Initiative Wohnen.2050" and in piloting sustainable technologies, such as a hybrid heat pump system tested in apartment buildings.
Recent NHW projects in the Frankfurt region include “Leuchte Bergen-Enkheim,” which offers 24 energy-efficient condominiums designed to KfW 55 standards, incorporating local heating and infrastructure for electric vehicle charging. NHW is also a partner in the large-scale Schönhof Viertel development, aiming to deliver around 2,000 new residential units with an emphasis on a diverse housing mix.
As a public enterprise, NHW’s scope extends to integrated mobility concepts, social infrastructure, and support for innovative start-ups through its "hubitation" network. The company is primarily focused on long-term security for tenants and sustainable neighbourhood development without drawing on promotional hyperbole or broad generalisations.
