The Heiliggeistspital-Stiftung München is a public-law foundation based in Munich, with a history dating to 1208, when Duke Ludwig I “der Kelheimer” established a pilgrim house beside the Heiliggeist Church at today’s Viktualienmarkt.1 The city describes it as Munich’s oldest foundation.1
Its statutory purpose is to pursue charitable and benevolent aims through the operation and maintenance of Altenheim Heiliggeist, a care home for older people.1 The foundation owns the home, located at Dom-Pedro-Platz 6 in the Neuhausen district; its operator is MÜNCHENSTIFT GmbH, a subsidiary of the City of Munich.1 After renovation, the home offered more than 200 places in fully inpatient care from the end of 2009.1
The foundation’s stated aim is to take responsibility for older and care-dependent people through forward-looking, environmentally conscious action.1 Its assets also include Forst Kasten, a forest of more than 840 hectares southwest of Munich; proceeds from the forest contribute substantially to the care home’s operating costs.1 The foundation is administered by the City of Munich through the Lord Mayor and City Council.1 Its activities and assets described by the city are concentrated in Munich.1
