Euractiv is a pan-European media network focused on EU policies, founded in 1999 by French publisher Christophe Leclercq. Headquartered at Boulevard Charlemagne 1 in Brussels, with additional offices in Paris and Berlin, it employs around 50 journalists across Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
The organization started as a digital-only outlet, offering free access to promote transparency in EU information. It expanded into a network covering 12 European countries through partnerships with local media like Spain's EFE and Greece's Athens News Agency. Journalists in these affiliates adapt Brussels-centric stories into national languages and contexts, localizing currencies and angles without heavy reliance on translators. In May 2023, Belgian media group Mediahuis acquired it, marking the group's first international platform purchase. About a fifth of its 2019 revenue came from public sources, including the EU, alongside private funding.
Euractiv organizes over 100 events yearly, such as workshops and debates, often sponsored, gathering policymakers, businesses and civil society. Its eight policy hubs—agrifood, economy, energy and environment, global Europe, health, politics, technology, and transport—track decisions from inception. Newsletters like The Brief (launched 2016), The Capitals, Tech Brief and Transport Brief (2019) deliver targeted updates. The site attracts 500,000 to 1 million monthly visits.
A 2022 Council of the European Union study ranked it second among MEPs' most influential outlets; in 2023's EU Media Poll, it placed fifth overall. Its coverage appears in outlets like The New York Times and Financial Times. Fondation EURACTIV, a linked non-profit, runs projects like #Media4EU and Stars4Media to support media innovation and combat disinformation.
