Cultura Bank, headquartered in Oslo, Norway, has operated as an independent savings bank since 1997, following a ten-year period as a member-owned credit union. With roots in the European alternative banking movement of the 1970s, it remains the only Norwegian bank that provides depositors with full transparency about where their money is invested. This includes disclosing specific recipients and the intended social and environmental outcomes.
By 2022, the bank’s loan portfolio grew from NOK 20 million in its early years to over NOK 900 million, with staffing increasing from four to twenty employees. About 5,000 retail customers are served throughout Norway, although most are in the Oslo area. As of 2022, the bank’s lending focused on sectors such as organic agriculture, natural food production, education, healthcare, and cultural projects.
Standalone initiatives include support accounts enabling customers to contribute to organizations like WWF-Norway and Save the Children while saving. The bank’s crowdfunding platform, CulturaFlokk, has raised NOK 2.9 million for 96 grassroots projects since 2018. Notable recent recipients include the Tori-maa House solar project in Kolkata and Norwegian food producers awarded at national prize ceremonies.
Cultura Bank is a member of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values and consistently achieves top rankings on the Norwegian Ethical Bank Guide. Its vision is to integrate ethics and social responsibility into financial practice, emphasizing societal benefit above pure profit.
