Baugenossenschaft Hamburger Wohnen eG is a housing cooperative based in Hamburg-Langenfelde that manages approximately 5,100 apartments across the city for over 7,600 members. The organization emerged in mid-2007 from the merger of two long-established cooperatives: Wohnungsgenossenschaft Langenfelde, founded in 1921, and Baugenossenschaft Hamburg-Nordost, established in 1922.
The cooperative focuses on providing secure, affordable housing while prioritizing sustainability and community engagement. Its mission encompasses developing accommodations for diverse living situations—from single-occupancy units to family homes and specialized senior housing. Beyond rental management, the organization operates neighborhood centers that foster social interaction among residents and offers educational courses and events.
Recent projects demonstrate the organization's commitment to mixed-income housing. The "Kiek in Barmbek" development includes 104 apartments, with 63 units receiving public funding and the remainder offering initial rents of 10 euros per square meter for five years. Similarly, "Hand in Hand für Barmbek," which held its groundbreaking ceremony in January 2025, represents collaboration with multiple partners to create socially balanced residential neighborhoods.
The cooperative also participates in WohnPlus3, a partnership with two other Hamburg housing cooperatives that collectively manage over 12,300 apartments. This alliance enables shared procurement, improved efficiency, and expanded housing options for members seeking relocations within the partner networks.
The organization remains active in modernization efforts, integrating energy efficiency improvements and hydraulic balancing systems into existing properties while maintaining affordability for its membership base.
