Context and Overview
The "re-MODULEES Final Report" was created as part of a project funded by the European Union's HORIZON 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 955529. The report was authored by Peter Op ’t Veld of HI&A, with contributions from various partners including IRI UL, CNR, and DOWEL among others. The project aimed to develop a framework for activating the EU-wide retrofit market in the residential building sector, focusing on sustainable housing solutions.
Project Goals
The main objective of re-MODULEES is to facilitate the decarbonization of the EU building stock while accelerating deep renovation processes. This is achieved by creating digital and physical Renovation Hubs and a market activation framework that is customizable to local conditions. The project encompasses various pilot markets across seven EU countries: Spain, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, and the Netherlands.
Key Achievements
The project has successfully developed and implemented the Retrofitting Market Activation Platforms in these pilot markets. It focuses on modular solutions that cater to the unique climatic, economic, and social characteristics of each region. The project aims to enhance energy efficiency and promote clean energy solutions through standardized processes while maximizing cost reductions and local impacts.
Digital Integration
A significant aspect of re-MODULEES is the digitalization of existing outputs from relevant EU projects. The project has created a comprehensive online platform that acts as a virtual Renovation Hub, providing access to a range of tools, resources, and support mechanisms tailored to the needs of local markets. The platform enhances the visibility of renovation business models and facilitates access to affordable financing options.
Stakeholder Engagement
The project emphasizes a people-centered approach, actively engaging local stakeholders through the establishment of Local Advisory Boards (LABs). These boards serve as platforms for dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders, enabling the identification of challenges and opportunities in the renovation market. The re-MODULEES initiative is designed to foster a community of active participants in the renovation process, ensuring that solutions are relevant and impactful.
Market Activation Strategies
The re-MODULEES project employs a multi-faceted strategy for market activation. This includes the clustering of efforts and capitalization on key outputs from previous EU projects, as well as the development of tailored go-to-market strategies for different regions. The project also addresses social, financial, and legal barriers to renovation, facilitating decision-making processes for stakeholders.
Pilot Market Insights
The report details the characteristics and outcomes of the seven selected pilot markets, highlighting their unique socio-economic environments. Each pilot market is represented by a diverse set of stakeholders, including homeowners, construction companies, financial institutions, and policy makers. The gathered insights enable a comprehensive understanding of the renovation landscape, ensuring that proposed solutions meet local needs.
Conclusion
Overall, the re-MODULEES project represents a significant step toward achieving sustainable housing across Europe. By integrating innovative digital solutions with local stakeholder engagement, the initiative aims to create a lasting impact on the renovation market, ultimately contributing to the EU's decarbonization targets and enhancing the quality of residential buildings.
