Wohnungsgenossenschaft „Treptow-Süd“ eG is a housing cooperative based in the Berlin district of Treptow-Köpenick, primarily in the neighborhoods of Adlershof and Niederschöneweide. The organization was founded in 1957 by 14 employees of the publishing company “TRIBÜNE,” at a time of significant housing shortages in East Berlin.
As of 2021, the cooperative reports 1,729 members and owns 1,466 apartments, distributed across 39 residential properties. The total residential area managed is approximately 75,000 square meters. Buildings span from typical four-story Q3A types to three-story L57 houses and several newly constructed complexes. In addition to apartments, the cooperative offers around 430 garages and parking spaces, with apartments ranging in size from 30 to 140 square meters.
Wohnungsgenossenschaft „Treptow-Süd“ eG’s properties are notable for their large, green inner courtyards, several of which are under monumental protection due to their historic character in Adlershof. Since 2013, the cooperative has undertaken several new construction projects to provide family-friendly and accessible housing. For example, it completed 34 new apartments on Dörpfeldstraße in 2014 and another 57 in Niederschöneweide in 2019.
The cooperative is organized as a member-driven entity, with a statutory commitment to affordable and community-oriented living rather than profit maximization. Members participate in cooperative governance, and the organization supports cultural and neighborhood activities, particularly through its community center. These characteristics distinguish it from conventional rental housing companies.
