The Wohnungsgenossenschaft Johannisthal eG operates as a housing cooperative in Berlin's Treptow-Köpenick district, tracing its roots to October 1954 when it emerged as one of the first workers' housing cooperatives in East Berlin. During its formative years, the organization relied heavily on member self-help efforts to establish itself in the post-war landscape.
Today, the cooperative manages 1,745 apartments across several neighborhoods, including Johannisthal, An der Königsheide, and Am Plänterwald. Its membership base comprises approximately 2,149 people. The entire building stock has undergone complete renovation and modernization, transforming these properties into valued assets within the green surroundings of Treptow.
The cooperative's headquarters sits at Sterndamm 200A in Berlin-Johannisthal, where it also operates a community meeting center on Stubenrauchstraße. This facility serves as a social hub where members can participate in various courses and projects. The organization provides practical services including 24-hour repair and emergency reporting, guest apartments, garages, parking spaces, and care and social counseling.
In 2016, the cooperative expanded its portfolio by completing 22 new residential units, demonstrating its continued commitment to providing housing for members. The cooperative maintains its founding principle of offering secure, quality, and affordable housing while emphasizing member participation, fostering good neighborly relations, and integrating different generations. These operational guidelines reflect the cooperative's approach to property management and community building in southeastern Berlin.
