The Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft „Amtsfeld“ eG is a housing cooperative based in Berlin-Köpenick, founded in 1972, with a current portfolio of around 2,500 rental apartments located primarily in the Treptow-Köpenick district. Originally established as an Arbeiterwohnungsbaugenossenschaft (AWG) with the VEB Kabelwerk Oberspree as its supporting enterprise, Amtsfeld was an example of the state-sponsored housing model in the GDR era, designed to provide homes for workers and their families. After German reunification, the organization adapted to new market conditions, thoroughly modernizing its housing stock—originally built in the prefabricated construction style of the 1970s and 80s—to meet contemporary standards, including elevators and modern heating systems.
Amtsfeld’s apartments range from one to five rooms, with living areas from just under 30 m² to over 150 m², catering to singles, families, and seniors. The cooperative is led by a members’ assembly, involving residents directly in decision-making and project development. Recent construction activities include the “Quartier Charlotte” project and two new buildings on Salvador-Allende-Straße, completed in 2024, adding 77 apartments—many designed to be accessible for people with disabilities. These projects reflect a focus on expanding family-friendly and barrier-free living spaces, as well as integrating green spaces and communal areas.
Beyond managing and developing housing, Amtsfeld operates a guest apartment, a members’ meeting place, and offers online member services. The cooperative’s headquarters are at Müggelheimer Straße 17C, Köpenick. While Amtsfeld is smaller than some Berlin cooperatives, it plays a visible role in its district, balancing heritage and modernization in a still dynamic housing market.
