Self Organised Architecture (SOA) is an independent, not-for-profit collaborative based in Ireland, dedicated to promoting community-led housing initiatives. Founded in 2018 by architects Tom O'Donnell, Padraig Flynn, Colin McDonnell, and Jim Roche, SOA aims to empower communities to take a leading role in creating secure, affordable homes.
The organisation focuses on quality and social cohesion in the built environment, working with community groups, government agencies, and local authorities to develop community-led housing policy and pilot projects. SOA's vision is for communities of all sizes to have the right and ability to co-create affordable homes, benefiting individuals, communities, and cities.
Key projects include the "Roadmapping Community-Led Housing in Ireland" research initiative, which produced a series of handbooks to advance community-led housing projects in Ireland. SOA also participates in the European Community Land Trust Network and the Sustainable Housing for Inclusive and Cohesive Cities (SHICC) project, supporting the growth of community land trusts across North-West Europe.
SOA's work includes advising community-led housing projects, consulting with state and local bodies, and developing networks and joint projects. The organisation also engages in policy research, advocacy, and education, aiming to inform and empower people in Ireland about socially and environmentally sustainable alternative housing models. Through its initiatives, SOA seeks to address urgent issues around housing, community, quality of life, and climate change.
