Cooperative City Magazine, run by the Vienna-based consultancy Eutropian, documents collaborative urban development across Europe. Founded by urban experts Daniela Patti and Luca Mattioli, it emerged from their work on regeneration projects in cities like Vienna, Rome, and Budapest, where they observed grassroots groups reshaping neighborhoods amid economic pressures.
Eutropian, with offices in Vienna and Rome, coordinates European Union-funded exchanges through programs like URBACT, linking over 300 municipalities and civil society groups since the early 2010s. The magazine, launched as their flagship platform, has published hundreds of articles, interviews, videos, podcasts, and webinars since 2017, drawing from on-site visits to initiatives in more than 20 countries.
It spotlights concrete cases, such as Budapest's Miutcánk platform, where residents exchange tools and services to build neighborly ties, or community-led food networks in Lisbon addressing metropolitan governance gaps. During the 2020 pandemic, the team produced the "Cooperative City in Quarantine" series—14 weekly Facebook broadcasts reaching 65,000 viewers—discussing mobility, refugees, and public spaces, followed by the ongoing "Cooperative City Dialogues."
A small team, including project manager Sophie Bod and contributor Andrea Giuliano, handles editing and outreach. The publication examines tensions between citizen efforts, municipal policies, and funding schemes, without prescribing solutions. It fills a gap by amplifying overlooked stories from complex urban ecosystems, from civic venues in crisis-hit areas to solidarity economies in post-industrial districts.
