Are We Europe is a non-profit foundation and media platform founded in 2016 in Amsterdam by four students—Ties Gijzel, Kyrill Hartog, Marije Martens, and Mick ter Reehorst—frustrated by traditional media's narrow coverage of Europe. Based between Amsterdam and Brussels, it fosters a borderless Pan-European media space through innovative, cross-border journalism that amplifies underreported stories, diverse voices, and complex identities across the continent.
The platform publishes a bimonthly print and online magazine, themed around issues like climate change, migration, elections, disinformation, and queer life. It collaborates with over 1,000 journalists, writers, and creatives from more than 40 European countries, using "story sprints" for rapid, multimedia productions that challenge conventions and build transnational perspectives. Projects include Circle Hubs for media training, Untold Stories for overlooked regions, and ENTR for social media content.
Are We Europe supports emerging talent via grants, workshops, and a membership program, while upholding editorial principles of transparency, inclusivity, and design-driven storytelling. Recognized with awards like the European Charlemagne Youth Prize, it envisions a vibrant, united European narrative beyond national divides.
