The Wallensteinstrasse housing project is a cooperative development located in Berlin-Karlshorst, on an 11,030 square meter plot bordering the districts of Rummelsburg and Friedrichsfelde. Scheduled for completion by 2027, it will deliver a total of 197 apartments, with over half designated as subsidized social housing. The project is intentionally designed to prioritize housing access for individuals and groups facing disadvantages in Berlin’s competitive housing market, such as those experiencing racism, people who identify as trans* or non-binary, queer persons, elders, individuals with chronic illness or disabilities, single parents, and others who often encounter discrimination.
A key feature of Wallensteinstrasse is its emphasis on community participation and self-organization. The residential buildings will surround a noise-reduced, car-free courtyard, and shared spaces will include multifunctional communal rooms, a kitchen, a workshop, gardens, and a rooftop terrace, all collaboratively shaped by future residents. Additionally, the project will house a new daycare center providing 92 childcare places, further integrated with social and cultural facilities.
Wallensteinstrasse’s construction reflects sustainability goals, utilizing timber for upper floors and conventional materials for lower levels and the daycare. The cooperative model ensures affordability and long-term financial stability, funded in part through cooperative shares and member solidarity. By foregrounding inclusive allocation policies, environmental standards, and grassroots democracy, Wallensteinstrasse aims to set a benchmark for socially and ecologically responsible urban development in Berlin.
