La Borda is a pioneering cooperative housing project located in Barcelona, Spain. Completed in 2018, it was developed as a self-organized initiative to provide affordable, non-speculative housing for its members. The project is situated on public land in the Sants neighborhood, with a 75-year leasehold agreement.
The six-story building comprises 28 units ranging from 40 to 75 square meters, along with extensive communal spaces that make up about 25% of the total area. These shared areas include a kitchen-dining room, laundry, multipurpose space, guest rooms, and outdoor terraces, all designed to foster community interaction and cooperative living.
La Borda stands out for its commitment to sustainability and affordability. It is one of Spain's largest wooden buildings, utilizing cross-laminated timber for its structure to reduce environmental impact. The project also incorporates passive design strategies and a biomass boiler to minimize energy consumption and costs for residents.
